Twilight by Anne Selden Annab

Twilight

The cats gather
tensely
leaning
towards
the bird's cage.

The bird
cracks open seed,
one by one,
and drops the shells,
two by two.

The cats grow bold.
One creeps up quite close
to the cage,
lip licking,
puts up his paw
prepared to seize

but the bird is free.
